Ugly vs. Beauty

Aesthetics is the study of beauty.  Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines aesthetics also esthetics\ es-ˈthe-tiks , is- , British usually  ēs- \ plural in form but singular or plural in construction : a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste and with the creation and appreciation of beauty.

Thinking about this form of philosophy what is your aesthetic?

As the saying goes, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”  What is beauty to you?  How would you visually define it?  Looking at the opposite of beauty, what is non-aesthetically pleasing to you?  If you could only visually describe it, what would you photograph.  For this project, students will explore the ugliness and beauty of the world.

Ground rules:  Be Kind, be respectful and thoughtful!  You can have fun with this, but be serious with your content.

Research:

Read the article on Aesthetics: https://digital-photography-school.com/how-aesthetic-differs-style-why-it-matters/

Journal about your own Aesthetics and Style. Maybe you don’t have them yet, but look over you photos from last semester and begin to develop you style and aesthetics.

In google doc, write your name, date, and assignment on the top of the page.

What is beauty to you? Give an example of beautiful images and explain what makes them aesthetically pleasing. Find an image that is not aesthetically interesting, and explain why. Lots of details.

Looking at your images, where is your voice in your work last semester?

Referring to the article, how do you shoot?

Then, look for a photographer that you feel has a style that looks similar to yours (or what you what your style to be). Share two examples of her photographs, name, type of photography, and explain what you would like to photograph in this semester.
